Mt. Fuji is a symbolic mountain of Japan. It was registered as a world cultural heritage site “Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration” in 2013. At the same time, 25 properties such as shrines, mountain trail and wind cave, which have a long history with Mt. Fuji, were also designated as components sites of Mt. Fuji.
From ancient times, Mt. Fuji has been popular with Japanese people as an object of faith or art, and it has fostered what belief in mountains should be like and art culture peculiar to Japan such as “Ukiyo-e” painted by Hokusai Katsushika and Hiroshige Utagawa in the latter 19 century, which influenced on overseas later. Fujinomiya city has 6 of 25 component sites which are linked to Mt. Fuji, including Mt. Fuji.
Fujisan Hongu Sengentaisha Shrine is the head temple of a number of Sengen-jinja shrines all over Japan and its history dates back to more than 1,200 years. The deity named Princess of Blossoms (Konohana-sakuya-hime) who is a glory of beauty and virtue has been enshrined in this shrine. She has been worshiped by many people as a deity of fire calamity prevention, safe birth, voyage, fishing, farming and so on.
In Yamamiya Sengen-jinja Shrine, there is no house of worship. Instead of a house of worship, a worship area surrounded with stones has been set as a house of worship, Mt. Fuji can be seen from there, because Mt. Fuji itself is an object to be worshiped.
In this shrine, there is a huge Japanese cedar and a huge ginkgo tree. These are natural treasures designated by Shizuoka prefecture and popular among the locals as sacred trees.
Hitoana Fuji-ko Iseki is a sacred place of Fuji-ko which is one of popular religions in the Edo period. The religion’s patriarch, Kakugyo Hasegawa did ascetic practice and passed away from 16 century to 17 century here.
The name of “Shiraito Falls” comes from the water flowing down like silk threads are hanging from precipice. The height is 20m and the width is 150m. The Shiraito Falls is one of the leading waterfalls in Japan and also it is known as a national scenic place and a natural treasure.
